OVER DIT PROJECT

Op donderdag 27 juni wordt om 16.30 uur in de Sarphatistraat een klein feestje gevierd. Reden is de voltooiing van de levensgrote muurschildering ‘Urban Jungle’, die street art kunstenaar Tim Rodermans de afgelopen weken heeft aangebracht op de blinde zijmuur van het pand Sarphatistraat 163. Op de muur is volgens Rodermans een jongen te zien die ‘uitkijkt naar zijn toekomst’. De Sarphatistrook staat bekend om zijn doorgaande verkeer, aldus de kunstenaar. ‘Daarom wilde ik met Urban Jungle op deze plek een moment van verstilling en reflectie toevoegen.’

Zowel de omwonenden als eigenaar Woonstichting Lieven de Key steunden Rodermans, die ook op verschillende andere plekken in Amsterdam heeft gewerkt. Een bekend werk van zijn hand is de door corona geïnspireerde schildering van een jongen en een meisje op de hoek van de Sarphatistraat en het Weesperplein. Als het aan de bewoners van Centrum ligt, gaat Rodermans deze schildering overigens vervangen door een nieuw werk met als titel ‘Groene Urban Jungle’. Een voorstel voor financiering van dat werk is de bewoners deze maand voorgelegd in het kader van Centrum Begroot.

Mural Urban Jungle – A boy looking forward to his future in the city

The neighborhood has a beautiful new mural on Sarphatistraat. The work is by Tim Rodermans. A mural with a boy looking forward to his future. From a small safe environment to high school in the Urban Jungle of Amsterdam; what will the future bring him? Being one with the nature around us and ensuring an environmentally conscious attitude to life.

Contribute to the quality of life in the neighborhood
A mural is one of the ways to contribute to the attractiveness and quality of life of a neighborhood. Urban Jungle transforms the boring blank wall into an optimistic eye-catcher for residents and passers-by.

About the location of the mural
The buildings at Sarphatistraat 163 – 213 belong together. They were built in 1908 and designed by architect H.P. Berlage and have been a municipal monument since 2005. There was a corner building on the site of the mural, but it was demolished years ago. Now here is the passage from Sarphatistraat to the Roeterseiland Campus of the UvA.
